If you and your spouse, or other parent of your children, are going through child custody, you will want to create an effective parenting plan. Emotions are generally flared during a divorce and parties may not be on their “best behavior.” Robotically going through the motions of a custody plan for the sake of creating one will not be of use to anyone involved. When you create an effective parenting plan, your children will benefit significantly and you will have less stress. Here are some important tips to follow.

One of the first steps you should take is clarifying concerns you might have regarding custody. You need to speak up during your child custody negotiations, especially if you have legitimate causes for apprehension. Worrying about the other parent’s parenting style is not sufficient. But, if you are concerned about a drug or alcohol problem, you need to bring it to the attention of the court.

Always respect the needs of your children when creating a parenting plan. Never put your children in the middle of your divorce. Instead, both parents need to show their children love more than ever! Do your best to parent your children appropriately and refrain from using time with them to bash the other parent.

You should create the parenting plan as soon as possible in an effort to prevent added stress on the children. They need stability, especially if they are young. By putting a parenting plan in place immediately, you will be able to help your kids adjust to the changes.
